CliNeDest

In the project CliNeDest, eight Baltic Sea region tourist destinations empower tourism companies to develop low-carbon offerings that meet the growing demand for sustainability, and anchor the region as a climate-neutral travel hub.
In the spotlight

Climate Neutral Destinations project engages destinations in the Baltic Sea Region to help tourism companies make a transition towards climate-smart tourism business. Destination Management Organisations and Municipalities in Tampere, Helsinki, Tallinn, Kaunas, Pomerania, Aarhus and Stavanger cooperate closely with various tourism companies and national tourism organisations to co-create a digital Climate Smart Business Toolkit. So far, the project has involved more than 70 tourism companies in training workshops where the first section of the Toolkit was tested.

Climate Neutral Destinations - How low carbon tourism services can double the fun for the customers?

Climate change and customer demand for sustainable low carbon travel options are key challenges for tourism. Tourism industry needs easy tools to manage and reduce their carbon emissions, and create business value based on true sustainability.

CliNeDest project helps tourism companies and destinations in their climate-smart development through the following:

Climate Smart Business Toolkit and training programme

Toolkit helps companies to realise that less carbon does not have to mean less fun for the customers. A training programme is targeted at destination management organisations on how to utilize the Toolkit and engage tourism companies in the climate work of destinations. The Toolkit is tested with tourism companies and improved based on their feedback in three phases:

  1. Testing the best tools for measuring carbon footprint and for developing climate-smart business plan.
  2. Co-creating attractive low-carbon visitor experiences and communicating them in line with the requirements of the EmpCo - EU Empowering Consumers for Green Transition Directive.
  3. Developing systematic destination level knowledge management model in cooperation with destination management organisations, public authorities, and companies. This provides guidelines to integrate climate smart tourism development in strategic planning and decision-making in destinations.

Developing climate-smart destinations

Partners engage tourism stakeholders and key public authorities in their destinations to strengthen cooperation, support climate action in tourism, elaborate and utilise knowledge management model and agree the next steps towards a climate-smart destination.

Climate Smart Destination Network

CliNeDest project establishes a transnational network of destinations to support climate-smart tourism development and engage other destinations to join the movement. The network will continue meeting and cooperating also after the project.
